## How we check Duolingo

We watch www.duolingo.com from all five of our probe regions, every 2 minutes. A region that sees a failure does not make this page say "down" on its own: a second region has to agree first, the same confirmation rule every YoPingMe monitor uses.

We watch Duolingo's own web host and pin the response an anonymous request receives, rather than assuming a 2xx. The mobile apps talk to a separate authenticated API with its own availability, so this is a reachability signal for Duolingo's web infrastructure rather than a claim about the app experience directly.

The live board - the current verdict, 24-hour, 7-day, and 30-day uptime, and per-region response times - is on the HTML page at https://yoping.me/status/duolingo. Those numbers change too fast to repeat honestly in a static mirror, so where an answer below says "the board above", it means that page.

## What is Duolingo?

Duolingo delivers language lessons through a gamified structure built
around daily streaks, experience points, and a mix of free and paid
tiers, almost entirely through native mobile apps rather than a web
experience most learners use day to day. That app-first, habit-driven
design is worth keeping in mind, because a single missed or
slow-loading lesson reads very differently in a streak-based product
than it would in an app with no daily stakes attached.

Progress syncing is the detail most worth understanding before treating
a missing streak update as evidence of an outage. Lessons can complete
locally on the device and sync their result to the server a short time
afterward, so a brief gap between finishing an exercise and seeing an
updated streak or XP total reflects normal sync timing rather than lost
work, especially on a slower connection. Giving it a few minutes before
assuming anything was lost resolves most of these on its own.

Network interruptions mid-lesson produce a specific kind of stuck state
that looks like a platform failure and usually is not one. An exercise
that will not submit, or a lesson screen frozen partway through, is more
often a dropped connection on the learner's device than a server
problem, and restarting the app typically clears it faster than waiting
on any external status reading, including this one.

Purchased items like streak freezes and streak repairs are account
records rather than something an outage could affect. A brief period of
unreachability does not remove or invalidate anything already applied to
an account, and the practical response to a streak looking at risk
during a reported incident is to check again once service is confirmed
healthy rather than assuming the worst while it is ongoing.

Session expiry is a common source of confusion that has nothing to do
with platform health. Being logged out and prompted to sign in again
usually reflects ordinary session handling, a password change, or a new
device authenticating, and signing back in resolves it immediately
regardless of whether anything was ever wrong with Duolingo's services.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Duolingo down right now?

Check the board above; it reflects our own probes against Duolingo's web host from all five of our regions, refreshed every couple of minutes and confirmed across two regions before this page would call it down.

### My lesson will not load or submit but this page shows Duolingo up. What should I check?

Check your own network and the app's own connection state first, since these cause far more lesson trouble than a platform outage. A weak or interrupted connection mid-lesson can leave an exercise stuck submitting, and a stale cached session left open for a long time can behave oddly until the app is restarted, while Duolingo's servers answer normally elsewhere.

### My streak or XP did not update after finishing a lesson. Is that an outage?

Usually not, and usually a sync timing issue rather than lost progress. The app can complete a lesson locally and sync the result to the server shortly after, so a brief delay between finishing and seeing an updated streak or XP total is normal, particularly on a slow connection, and it typically catches up within a few minutes.

### Does a Duolingo outage affect a streak freeze or streak repair I purchased?

No. An outage affects the ability to reach the service and complete new lessons, not records of items already purchased or applied to an account. If a streak appears at risk during a reported incident, checking the account after service resumes is the reliable way to confirm status rather than assuming the worst mid-incident.

### The app suddenly wants me to log back in. Should I check for a platform incident?

Almost never. Sessions can expire or get invalidated after a password change, a new device signing in, or ordinary session handling, independent of whether Duolingo's services are healthy. Signing back in resolves it, and it is not something an outage would cause.
